Can you deliver 50…the PharmD conversion exam.

One of our most ardent readers sent this to us, I personally thought it was more of a medical doctor thing, but he made us understand it was one of the questions they were asked, when he was trying to convert from Bpharm (obtainable in NIgeria) to PharmD (obtainable in the United States). Also, we have very encouraging number of medical doctors audience, here is the question, hook, line and sinker.
A 45 year old woman presents to her physician for her yearly routine examination. She has no current health problems. Her past medical, surgical and family histories are unremarkable. She is happily married and has two healthy children. She doesn’t smoke or drink alcohol. She doesn’t have any risk factors for HIV or any sexually transmitted diseases. Her vital signs are within normal limits. Physical examination and laboratory investigations are normal. She doesn’t have any screening tests for the past 5 years. read more

Can you deliver 48: the celecoxib…guest write in

I personally want to appreciate you for the wonderful work you are doing with this wonderful series, since I started following it, I must confess, I have learnt a whole lot. Ensure you keep it.
I went to the hospital to visit a friends wife who was delivered of a baby through a Caesarian, on our arrival, we met with the doctor, in his office ( it was a private hospital), while he was congratulating my friend for a successful surgery and explaining how difficult it was…but in all, we thank God it was successful. We now decided to go see our wife, when we got to her private ward, the nurse told the doctor their pharmacist said the diclofenac which was part of her take home drug should be changed to Celecoxib, the doctor said, if the pharmacist said give celecoxib, then give that.
The question I want to ask now is, what was going on in the pharmacist’s mind
Pharmacist Audu wrote in from Jos, plateau state Nigeria.

Can you deliver 47…the infertility

Can you deliver 47…the infertility

A lady who has been married for four years with two children (4 and 2 years) got a job, that involves a lot of standing, because of this, her doctor placed her initially on cataflam (diclofenac)one tablet twice daily, it was working for her, however, about two months ago, her doctor changed the prescription to tab naproxen. Also for the past 6months she has been on wellwoman conception, but this time she asked to see the pharmacist, when the pharmacist was called, she asked him about fertile aid( a multivitamin). Out of curiosity, the pharmacist inquired what she wanted it for. ,” I have been trying for a baby for over a year now, I have been everywhere, I don’t even know what kind of thing befall my enemy” she explained. The pharmacist asked her what other drugs she’s been on, and that was how the above story was elicited.so, for the past six months, she has, in summary been on
Ginsomin plus
Cataflam
Naproxen
Wellwoman
Wellwoman conception
And now fertile aid.
Note: the multivitamins was not taken together. So, she asked ” pharmacist, any idea why I am not getting pregnant despite all these infertility drugs and visitation to specialist and gyane”? I have never done abortion in my life. She concluded. Can we do anything for her as a pharmacist.

Meeting sales targets, but how are your patients?

Meeting sales targets, but how are your patients?

There is a trend in community pharmacy that unease’s young graduates in community pharmacy. I was taught almost throughout my stay in pharmacy school, on the need to show empathy to the patient, thus considering his/her financial muscle before recommending a drug, this has to be after the right drugs might have been selected, at the right dosage, blab bla bla. But have you ever wondered how setting targets in community pharmacy defeats these goals.

A friend shared this story with me. As a young pharmacy graduate, with great future ahead, he was and still interested in hospital practice. While discussing a colleague, they talked about pharmacy generally and the potentials bot tapped and untapped in the pharmacy profession, they discussed the challenges of practicing as a Pharmacist in Nigeria, he particularly was telling, this other colleague, of how he loved hospital practice and would love to go into it fully. This other person was more interested in industrial or community practice, while they were getting along with their discussion, this other colleague remembered that there were some expatriate coming into the country to establish

It is a generally held belief in the Nigerian society today that “connection” is all that matter in job search, from internship to house jobs, residency etc etc, true as this may be, I can still assure you that there is always a place for those who worked hard, and that is the reason why we are doing all these. Keep working and reading hard, God will surely remember you in one of those he will favour when the list
