STROKE: An Insidious Killer On The Prowl In Nigeria

If you live in this part of the world, and are actively involved directly or indirectly with patient care, then chances are that you would have come across a stroke patient especially in the rural areas.

I sincerely do not think we have enough data to correlate the extent of destruction that stroke is causing in this part of the world. The aim of this write up is to help potential stroke patients and their relatives to prevent stroke, as we all know “prevention is better than cure”

Elevated high blood pressure that is not taken care of: Many Nigerians mix their health with their religious believe, they would not take drugs to manage their high blood pressure, because their religious leader thinks ” is not their portion”. Many become a victim of stroke due to negligence. If one has been diagnosed of being hypertensive, one needs to understand that it has no cure, therefore, it needs to be managed to prevent end organ damage like stroke. Not accepting that one is hypertensive is the green light that invites stroke. A patient needs to understand an elevated high blood pressure that is not taken care of, is what causes the blood vessels conveying blood to the brain to burst and cause stroke (hemorrhagic stroke)

High cholesterol level: Most potential stroke victim would have experienced high cholesterol level for a long time without either knowing of it or neglecting it. Such high level of cholesterol can cause blockade of vessels supplying blood to either brain(causing stroke) or the heart (causing heart attack)

What are the Symptoms of stroke: Before a potential stroke patient becomes its victim, he or she would have experienced one or more of these five most common signs

  • Numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg.
  • Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding others
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden dizziness, trouble walking, or loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

How Do You Manage Stroke:

Really there is no known procedure to treat or recover stroke patient, that is why we emphasize on the need to prevent stroke all together. However, if one eventually comes down with stroke, the following might help.

  1. The patient should get emergency care at reputable facility
  2. The patient should undergo treatment to prevent deterioration of the situation.
  3. Rehabilitation might be necessary to relearn forgotten skill due to the stroke.

As you put in more effort as a hypertensive or or high cholesterol patient, remember it is important to have your blood pressure checked. Stroke is so sudden, so catastrophic.
